Impressions about his medical trip to Kharkiv, Ukraine

From March 4th to March 10th, I had the privilege of joining a team from the International Children’s Heart Foundation on a mission to Kharkov, Ukraine. The Ukrainian Academy of Meidcal Sciences’ Institute of General and Emergency Surgery’s cardiac surgery department has been collaborating with ICHF since 2008, with the goal of eventually having an independent pediatric CT surgery program capable of operating CHD on a full spectrum of complexity and patient age. This international team, lead by Dr. Christian Gilbert, a pediatric CT surgeon from Memphis, consisted of cardiologists, PEDs intensivists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, PICU nurses and respiratory therapists from the US, UK, France, Belarus, and Canada. In the two weeks of the mission, the team conducted 22 open heart cases and 17 interventional cardiology cases with their respective Ukranian colleagues.
The learning objectives I drew up for myself were: to become familiarized with the operative and perioperative decision making in the management of CHD, to learn about the common complications of CHD and their management, to learn about patient care strategies specific to a resource-poor environment, and to improve my medical Russian vocabulary.
My duties on the team were to pursue the above educational plan as hands-on as possible, to provide interpretation in the PICU, OR and at the M&M conference, to provide technical support for video recording cases of interest, and other tasks. I even had the fortune of scrubbing in as second assist on a couple of cases. Working with the different disciplines provided a very intensive and rewarding educational experience, and hopefully my interpreting lead to better patient care and more effective knowledge sharing between the ICHF and Ukrainian colleagues.
The team at the Institute of General and Emergency Surgery, lead by Dr. Igor Polivenok is a fantastic group of highly motivated and very professional physicians who were excellent teachers for me and warm hosts for ICHF. I most certainly look forward to assisting this project by any means available.
